I spent the first 21 years of my life unable to swallow pills.

I was in grade school when my mother gave me an acetylsalicylic acid pill (aka “aspirin”) for a headache. I took a few swigs of water to flush it down my esophagus, but it somehow got stuck in my throat. That filled me with a fear of choking that remained for years.
