The steady stream of disturbing news coming from the White House these days has been unrelenting. Some of it, like the daily trolling of his political opponents, can be dismissed as simply Trump being Trump. However, other issues, such as the constant attacks on science and expertise, are especially concerning and likely to have harmful long-term consequences for our country.

In my opinion, the only explanation for these attacks is that scientists and experts threaten Trump’s authority. The inadequate response to the COVID pandemic during Trump’s first term was a significant factor in his reelection loss in 2020. From that experience, Trump drew several conclusions: First, scientists and experts pose a direct threat to his power, and he would never allow that to happen again. Second, the misunderstanding of science by some citizens can be easily exploited for political gain. Lastly, it is better to appoint unqualified yet loyal conspiracy theorists as cabinet members, regardless of the harm they may cause our country.
