A former senior adviser to Dr. Anthony Fauci has been indicted on federal charges alleging he conspired to hide his communications related to COVID-19 research as the pandemic unfolded. The Justice Department on Tuesday accused 78-year-old Dr. David Morens of using a private email to intentionally circumvent public record laws while employed at the National Institutes of Health. It accuses him of evading transparency laws while having discussions related to COVID-19 research grants, including an effort to revive a controversial coronavirus grant. Morens faces charges of conspiracy against the United States as well as destruction and concealment of records and aiding and abetting. If convicted, he could face decades in prison. An attorney for Morens declined to comment.
Democratic congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick has resigned before the House could sanction her in an ethics investigation. Members of the House Ethics Committee on Tuesday were set to weigh what punishment to recommend after they found Cherfilus-McCormick committed 25 violations of House rules and ethical standards. Republicans had already called for her expulsion. Cherfilus-McCormick also faces federal criminal charges accusing her of stealing $5 million in coronavirus disaster relief funds and using the money to buy items such as a 3-carat yellow diamond ring. Cherfilus-McCormick has pleaded not guilty to the criminal charges and says she is not guilty of ethics violations, either.
Schools have been closed across Iran since the United States and Israel launched the war on Feb. 28, with no word on when in-person instruction will resume. The fear of airstrikes has lifted since a fragile ceasefire went into effect, but life has not returned to normal. As with the COVID closures six years ago, it’s especially difficult for working parents with small children. The war has killed at least 3,000 people in Iran, including more than 165 people killed in a strike on an elementary school. The ceasefire is set to expire early next week, with the U.S. and Iran still divided on key issues like Iran’s enriched uranium.
