A local official says a federal immigration agent has shot and wounded a man in Austin, Texas. City Councilmember Mike Siegel says the Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer rammed the man’s car then got out of his federal vehicle and opened fire at least five times. The incident occurred in the early afternoon on the city’s north side. The man was taken to a hospital in unknown condition, Siegel says. Authorities planned to release additional information at an afternoon news conference. The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, didn’t immediately respond to requests for details.
Eighteen suspects who were arrested in the July 2021 killing of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse are awaiting extradition to the U.S. It marked the end of a drawn-out judicial process in Haiti for a killing that shocked the troubled Caribbean country. U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida Reding Quiñones said Sunday that the suspects will face trial in Florida. Quiñones didn't identify the suspects. But those who remain in Haiti awaiting trial include more than a dozen Colombian soldiers and a former Haitian government official. Quiñones said that 30 people have been indicted in Moïse’s killing. FBI Special Agent in Charge Brett Skiles noted that there were multiple arrests in the U.S. and abroad on Sunday.
Families of suspected illegal miners who died in Nigerian detention accuse officials of mistreatment
Lawan Mohammed is distraught over the death of his 25-year-old son Sulieman who was found dead in the custody of a Nigerian security agency. He said Sulieman was a mechanic in Niger state and was on his way home when he and some friends were arrested by personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps. Sulieman was found dead on Thursday in a cell along with 36 other detainees. A total of 67 people suspected of being illegal miners were held in a cell, and 37 of them probably died of suffocation. That's according to the state governor, Umar Bago. The security agency has blamed the deaths on a possible disease outbreak.
