Shucha, Craig reclaim Monterey Rock

JANESVILLE

Owen Shucha was the rock who helped bring the Monterey Rock back to the 糖心Vlog传媒 Craig trophy case Friday night.

The bruising junior fullback rushed for 124 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead Craig to a 27-23 victory over crosstown rival 糖心Vlog传媒 Parker in the Battle for Monterey Rock at Monterey Stadium.

Craig improved to 3-3 overall, but more important, 3-1 in the Badger Large Conference. That leaves the Cougars one win away from a WIAA postseason berth.

Snake-bitten Parker fell to 1-5 and 0-4 in conference play.

Craig trailed 23-20 in the fourth quarter but got the go-ahead score on Shucha鈥檚 26-yard scamper with 5:48 to play.

Shucha said regaining the coveted Monterey Rock trophy ranked first and foremost on the minds of the Craig players and coaches all week.

鈥淚f you have the Rock, you鈥檙e the stuff. And you run 糖心Vlog传媒,鈥 Shucha said.

鈥淭o go from 0-5 like we were last year to ending the game against Parker in victory formation and getting the Rock back is really special.鈥

Both teams moved the ball at will during the first half. Craig scored on its opening drive on Shucha鈥檚 5-yard run, but Parker answered to take an 8-7 lead on Preston Nelson鈥檚 10-yard scoring strike to Cayden Brandenburg and Griffin Davis鈥 2-point conversion run.

The teams traded touchdowns again before Shucha bulled in from 4 yards out with 5:44 left in the half to give Craig a 20-15 halftime lead.

Parker took its last lead on its first possession of the second half on Davis鈥 1-yard plunge with 9:37 left in the third quarter.

The Vikings had a chance to extend a 23-20 lead late in the third quarter when Cash Davis blocked a Craig punt at the Cougars鈥 16-yard line but could not take advantage of the short field.

鈥淥ur focus has been all year, and will continue to be, what do we need to do as a team to finish games,鈥 Parker coach Clayton Kreger said. 鈥淲e played hard and the effort was great, but we came up short again and that鈥檚 what is so frustrating.

鈥淏ut give credit to Craig and coach Bunderson. That鈥檚 a good football team, maybe on the road to the playoffs.鈥

Trailing 27-23 with a little more than five minutes to play, Parker had one last chance to get the go-ahead score. But a fourth-and-four pass play came up six inches short of a first down. Craig got a first-down run from Shucha and was able to run out the clock.

鈥淲e played hard for four quarters and had to,鈥 Craig coach Adam Bunderson said. 鈥淲e drove down the field like nothing on our first two drives, but then the offense stalled a little bit. But like they鈥檝e done all season, the guys keep battling and found a way.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 know if we鈥檙e a team of destiny or not, but what I do know is that we鈥檝e got a bunch of guys that have stuck together, never once complained and come to work each and every day.鈥

Craig will play at Beaver Dam next week. Parker will play host to Watertown.

Last-minute drive, Mason Crosby's kick lift Packers

SANTA CLARA, Calif.

With only seconds to play and no timeouts Sunday night, Aaron Rodgers had no doubt where he鈥檇 look to drive the Green Bay Packers to a game-winning kick.

Rodgers completed two deep passes to Davante Adams on a last-minute drive, setting up Mason Crosby鈥檚 51-yard field goal on the final play of the game that gave the Packers a 30-28 victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

鈥淢y first thoughts in devising how I wanted to get us into field-goal range was how could I get 17 (Adams) the ball,鈥 Rodgers said.

Rodgers did it twice on passes of 25 and 17 yards to Adams after the Packers took over at their 25 with 37 seconds left and no timeouts following Jimmy Garoppolo鈥檚 12-yard TD pass to Kyle Juszczyk.

Adams came back after taking a hard hit from Jimmie Ward that looked like it could knock him out of the game and finished with 12 catches for 132 yards.

鈥淗ow can you not be romantic about football?鈥 Rodgers said.

All that was left was for Crosby to make the kick and the Packers (2-1) to celebrate a win after they blew a 17-point lead.

鈥淐elebrating with the guys in the end zone, seeing that energy and feeling that juice, is what it鈥檚 all about,鈥 Crosby said. 鈥淎nd then carrying on into the locker room and guys pouring water all over my head and everybody, that鈥檚 what this game is all about. It was really special.鈥

The comeback spoiled the first game for the 49ers (2-1) with fans since beating Green Bay in the 2019 NFC title game. San Francisco had rallied from 17 points down to take the lead before getting crushed by Rodgers.

Rodgers threw for 261 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Packers to back-to-back wins after a season-opening 38-3 loss to New Orleans. Rodgers had six TD passes and no interceptions in wins over San Francisco (2-1) and Detroit.

鈥淚 feel good about our team,鈥 Rodgers said. 鈥淲eek One was an anomaly. I said that and I believe that. We bounced back Week Two. Played a great team tonight right down to the wire. This plane ride is going to feel incredible.鈥

The Niners returned home following back-to-back road wins back East but struggled to slow down Rodgers.

鈥淭here were some great individual efforts of guys just making unbelievable plays that got us in and gave us a chance to win that game,鈥 coach Kyle Shanahan said. 鈥淏ut some mistakes that we made throughout the game, you don鈥檛 win a lot of football doing that. That鈥檚 what we鈥檝e got to clean up.鈥

Rodgers connected on a 1-yard TD pass to Adams and a 12-yarder in the fourth quarter to Marquez Valdes-Scantling to help stake the Packers to the lead.

They made it 27-21 when Garoppolo inexplicably threw the ball to the ground behind him while trying to avoid a sack by Kenny Clark that set up a field goal by Crosby.

Garoppolo responded with the TD drive but it wasn鈥檛 enough.

鈥淭here鈥檚 always too much time on the clock if there鈥檚 ever time on the clock, especially with Aaron Rodgers,鈥 tight end George Kittle said. 鈥淚 think we have a really good defense. I don鈥檛 really have any worries when our defense is out on the field. But it鈥檚 Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams over there. They did what they had to do to win.鈥

Brewers clinch NL Central title with sweep of Mets

The final home game of the 2021 regular season truly was a memorable one for the Milwaukee Brewers and their fans.

Actually, the entire weekend was special in many ways.

Taking care of their own business and forgetting about the never-lose St. Louis Cardinals, the Brewers toppled the New York Mets, 8-4, Sunday afternoon to clinch the NL Central crown with a sellout crowd of 43,430 watching at American Family Field.

鈥淲ith everything that was going on this weekend, the fact that it happened today worked out about as good as we could have hoped for,鈥 manager Craig Counsell said.

鈥淚t was a special weekend here, a special weekend for Brewers fans. We gave them a great weekend. It鈥檚 as good as it gets for a Brewers fan this weekend. A great weekend to be a Brewers fan.鈥

Yes, the Cardinals did win again, sweeping the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field for their franchise-record 16th consecutive victory. But it did not matter.

St. Louis will be relegated to the second wild-card berth while the Brewers prepare for the NL Division Series after winning the NL Central for the third time (also in 2011 and 2018).

The Brewers will have home-field advantage in the NLDS and will play either Atlanta or Philadelphia. They finish their regular season with three games in St. Louis and three in Los Angeles.

Milwaukee entered the final 10-game home stand with a magic number of five but it was stuck on three for five days as they dropped the series finale to Chicago and were swept in four games by the Cardinals.

They then took matters in their own hands, sweeping New York in three games to peel one game off the magic number each day.

With the crowd roaring on every pitch, closer Josh Hader sealed the deal for the Brewers in the ninth, retiring the side in order.

When the final out was recorded by left fielder Christian Yelich, the players poured into the middle of the infield, mobbing each other as confetti and streamers filled the air.

The day had all the makings of capping a special weekend in franchise history, assuming the Brewers won the game. On Friday, they inducted Carlos Gomez, Yovani Gallardo and Francisco Rodriguez into their Wall of Honor. On Saturday, the team celebrated legendary Bob Uecker鈥檚 50th anniversary with the club.

A full house showed up Sunday on Uecker Talking Bobblehead Day, and Ryan Braun was feted before the game with an on-field retirement ceremony. That left it to the team to clinch the division and make it a final home weekend for the ages.

鈥淲ith everything that was going on this weekend, the fact that it happened today worked out about as good as we could have hoped for,鈥 manager Craig Counsell said. 鈥淚t was a special weekend here, a special weekend for Brewers fans. We gave them a great weekend.

As for managing to eliminate a team from the division race that has won 16 in a row, Counsell said, 鈥淎 ton of credit to the Cardinals right now. They鈥檙e doing amazing things. It鈥檚 incredible what they鈥檙e doing at this point in the season.

鈥淲e gave ourselves an opportunity to get it done today because we played a great series this weekend.鈥

Not that it was easy. The game got off to a bit of a rocky start when, with one down in the top of the first, Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor got into a 3-2 fastball from Freddy Peralta and sent it out to right field for his 18th homer of the season.

That 1-0 lead was short-lived. Kolten Wong led off the bottom of the inning with a walk from Carlos Carrasco and Willy Adames followed with a long home run to left field, his second since returning from a quadriceps injury at the beginning of the week.

鈥淲e needed these wins,鈥 Adames said of sweeping the Mets and taking care of business at home. 鈥淭hat was big when we scored a couple of runs in the first inning after they scored. That was big for us as a team. I鈥檓 just happy to be part of this.

鈥淲e know we have to go to St. Louis now and continue to compete and win games and prepare for the playoffs now. It鈥檚 impressive; (the Cardinals) have been playing such great baseball. You tip your cap to them. Hopefully, we will see them (down the road).鈥

Carrasco painted himself into a corner in the second inning by walking Wong and Adames with one down to load the bases. He paid for it when Yelich鈥檚 grounder to first sent home a run and Eduardo Escobar singled sharply to right, knocking in two more to put the Brewers on top, 5-1.

After cruising through the second and third innings, Peralta found quick trouble in the fourth. Michael Conforto led off with a single to center, Pete Alonso doubled to right and Javier B谩ez knocked them both in with a double to left.

With the score, 5-3, a runner on second and no outs, Peralta needed to dig in and he did. Jonathan Villar popped out, Jeff McNeil flied out to right, with Tyrone Taylor making a running catch in the gap, and Tom谩s Nido struck out to keep it a two-run game.

Peralta鈥檚 up-and-down game continued with a 1-2-3 fifth inning, then more issues in the sixth. With one down, Alonso walked and B谩ez singled to left, and that was all for the Brewers鈥 starter.

Lefty Brent Suter came on to strike out Villar but pinch-hitter Kevin Pillar blooped a single into shallow left to send home Alonso and make it a one-run game.

Looking to rebuild their cushion, the Brewers did exactly that with three runs in the bottom of the inning, getting a big helping hand from the Mets. With one down, pinch-hitter Daniel Vogelbach drew a walk off Jeurys Familia and Wong just missed a homer to center, banging a drive high off the wall to send pinch-runner Eric Lauer to third.

鈥淜olten Wong had an incredible weekend,鈥 Counsell said. 鈥淛ust the at-bats, and the pressure he put on, getting on base for those guys in the middle of the order was great.鈥

Adames followed with a bouncer to third baseman Villar, who hesitated, looked home and then threw past first base as Lauer鈥攔unning on contact鈥攕cored. With runners on second and third and one down, lefty Aaron Loup came on to retired Yelich on a popup to short.

Escobar hit a grounder into the hole at short that should have been the third out, but his one-hop throw to first eluded Alonso, allowing two runs to score and give the Brewers an 8-4 lead.

In a good sign for the Brewers鈥 bullpen, Devin Williams shook off a recent calf strain to pitch a 1-2-3 eighth inning. The Brewers weren鈥檛 sure at the time of the injury if Williams would have to go on the injured list but he looked fine in dispatching the Mets in order.

鈥淲e gave him some time and were conservative with it, and he was ready to go today,鈥 Counsell said. 鈥淎ll signs are good moving forward.鈥

Brewers principal owner Mark Attanasio, who followed tradition by celebrating with his team and spraying champagne in the clubhouse, said, 鈥淭his weekend was so much wall-to-wall excitement and tension. It didn鈥檛 really resonate to me until Craig Counsell told me 鈥榠f you love the Brewers, this is the most special weekend you could have.鈥欌

American made: Stricker's Team USA dominates Ryder Cup

Steve Stricker hoisted the Ryder Cup, gold and glorious, for all to see. Then he quickly huddled his young American team together to make sure all 12 players had their hands on it.

Nine of them had never before touched the 17-inch trophy in a moment of celebration.

They don鈥檛 expect Sunday to be the last time, either.

More than just winning back the Ryder Cup, the youngest U.S. team in history handed Europe its worst loss and delivered a strong message about how serious it is about changing the tone of these matches.

Daniel Berger won the final hole in the final match for the final point in a 19-9 victory, breaking by a half-point the record margin since Europe became part of the Ryder Cup in 1979.

鈥淭his is a new era,鈥 Stricker said. 鈥淭hese guys are young. They want it. They鈥檙e motivated. They came here determined to win. I could see it in their eyes.鈥

The six U.S. Ryder Cup rookies scored more points than all of Europe, combining for a 14-4-3 record. The Americans didn鈥檛 lose any of the five sessions for the first time in 44 years. Dustin Johnson became the first American to go 5-0 since 1979.

They had the best team on paper. They played even better on grass.

鈥淚t鈥檚 not just the strongest U.S. team I鈥檝e seen, but they all played well this week,鈥 Lee Westwood said. 鈥淓verybody performed and turned up this week. Looks like they are a team.鈥

The Americans finally looked like Europe, which has dominated the Ryder Cup by winning nine of the last 12 until getting routed along the shores of Lake Michigan.

Staked to a six-point lead鈥攏o team has ever rallied from more than four points going into the last day鈥攖he Americans quickly filled the scoreboards with their red numbers.

Scottie Scheffler took down the No. 1 player in the world with a 4-and-3 victory over Jon Rahm. Scheffler won the opening four holes and birdied five of the first six. He was among three rookies who were unbeaten this week.

Bryson DeChambeau smashed his tee shot on the 373-yard opening hole onto the green and then holed his 40-foot eagle putt to start out his win over Sergio Garcia.

The clinching blow came from Collin Morikawa, at 24 the youngest player on the team and already a two-time major champion. He made a 3-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole that assured the Americans at least the 14陆 points they needed.

They wanted more.

鈥淚 woke up this morning and I was trying to tell the guys, 鈥楲et鈥檚 get to 20 points,鈥 because this is going to be the next era of Ryder Cup team for the U.S. side,鈥 Patrick Cantlay said after he completed an unbeaten week with a win over Shane Lowry.

鈥淲e鈥檝e got a lot of young guys. I think they鈥檙e going to be on teams for a long time, and I wanted to send a message.鈥

Tony Finau had said on the eve of these matches that this was 鈥渢he big one.鈥 The Americans had so many fresh faces without any lasting scars from watching Europe celebrate so much over the years. It was a chance to change the culture, and this was a massive step.

The gallery saved one of its loudest cheers for Stricker, the Edgerton native who has been at the helm of two blowouts. He guided the U.S. team to a 19-11 victory in the Presidents Cup in 2017 and added his signature piece at Whistling Straits.

Johnson became the first American since Larry Nelson in 1979 to win all five matches, completing his perfect week by beating Paul Casey in a match he never trailed.

Casey, Matt Fitzpatrick and Bernd Wiesberger all failed to win a point. Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter, part of the backbone of European experience, didn鈥檛 win a match until singles, and by then it was too late.

The Americans were young, yes, and very good, with four of the top five in the world rankings. And they finally played like it. Those four players鈥擩ohnson, Morikawa, Cantlay and Xander Schauffele鈥攃ombined for a 14-1-2 record.

鈥淚鈥檝e never won a major,鈥 Stricker said, 鈥渂ut this is my major right here.鈥

Stricker wasn鈥檛 the only one in tears.

McIlroy led Europe off again and gave Schauffele his first loss of the week. It wasn鈥檛 nearly enough. All day along the shores of Lake Michigan, the outcome was inevitable.

McIlroy teared up in his interview when talking about how much the Ryder Cup means to him.

鈥淚鈥檝e never really cried or got emotional over what I鈥檝e done as an individual. I couldn鈥檛 give a (expletive),鈥 he said on NBC. 鈥淏ut this team ... to see Sergio break records, to see Jon Rahm come into his own this week, to see one of my best friends, Shane Lowry, make his Ryder Cup debut, all that. It鈥檚 phenomenal.

鈥淚鈥檓 disappointed that I didn鈥檛 contribute more this week,鈥 he said. 鈥淏ut in two years鈥 time, we鈥檒l go again and give it another so. Sorry for swearing, as well.鈥

As much as this was about a new generation of Americans, this looked to be an aging team of Europeans. They brought winning experience but not nearly enough form.

Garcia set the Ryder Cup record with 25 matches won in his career. Rahm was the star for Europe, living up to his billing as the No. 1 player by making so many big putts.

Both lost in singles鈥擥arcia to DeChambeau, while Rahm ran into Scheffler, who delivered big moments of his own this week.

There was little Europe could have done. This U.S. team was loaded and played like it.

鈥淭he U.S. were very strong,鈥 European captain Padraig Harrington said. 鈥淲hatever their plan was, they got it right this week. A strong team, played well. Kept the momentum. And they would have been tough to beat at the best of times, let alone when they are at top form. It鈥檚 a great win for them.鈥

The Americans won consecutive home games for the first time since 1983. The next step is winning on the road, which the Americans haven鈥檛 done since 1993.
