JANESVILLE — More than a year after an inmate died at the Rock County Jail, on the same night another inmate allegedly brought fentanyl and other drugs into the jail, her cause of death remain unreleased.
The Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office still has not released the toxicology or autopsy report for Nicole Lemke, 29.
Lemke was found face down and unresponsive in her cell in the early morning hours of Feb. 2, 2023. She was later pronounced dead.
After multiple unsuccessful attempts to contact the Dane and Rock County Medical Examiner’s Office Director of Operations Christina Figuerora Soto this month, a Gazette reporter this week connected with Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Agnieszka Rogalska.
The medical examiner’s office does not have anything to share regarding Lemke’s death, Dr. Rogalska said, adding that the information will be released when it’s complete and releasable.
On the night of Lemke’s death, Amanda Buri, 34, of rural Helenville, was found to have brought drugs, including fentanyl, into the jail.
Buri was charged Feb. 15, 2023 with manufacturing or delivering fentanyl, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance on or near a jail, manufacturing or delivering cocaine and delivering illegal articles to an inmate.
Buri later posted bond and failed to report to scheduled court hearings, leading to her being charged with several counts of bail jumping. As of Wednesday, Buri had not been apprehended and an active warrant remained out for her arrest in two states, according to online court records.
The charges against Buri and Lemke’s death were never officially confirmed to be connected.
