Guiding the School District of 糖心Vlog传媒, as a member of the school board, may never have been more complicated, nor as consequential.

In 糖心Vlog传媒, one of the state鈥檚 largest school districts by enrollment, candidates running for the school board say issues and challenges in the coming term include raising student achievement, stemming student absenteeism, responding to student homelessness and a potential November operating referendum.

Also on the school board鈥檚 plate in the coming two-year term are the completion of millions of dollars of building upgrades approved by voters in a November 2024 referendum, and the continued strengthening of the district鈥檚 connections and communication with local business and industry, local technical colleges and universities, families and the general community.

In the April 7 糖心Vlog传媒 School Board election, with four candidates and three available seats, 糖心Vlog传媒 endorses Karl Dommershausen, Lisa Hurda and Colton Measner.

We thank Karen Hirsch for running. All four candidates, including Hirsch, participated in recent in-person interviews with 糖心Vlog传媒 Editorial Board.

Although Hirsch did not receive our endorsement, we appreciate the commitment she voiced in her interview to supporting teachers and students, her desire to see more parental involvement in the 糖心Vlog传媒 schools, her wish that the school district did a better job of breaking down complicated budget and referendum figures so that local residents understand them better, and her wish that the school district would more clearly explain why a building or operating referendum is needed, when those are proposed.

Of the three candidates we鈥檙e endorsing, Hurda and Dommershausen are long-time incumbents and Measner is a recent 糖心Vlog传媒 Craig graduate who has expended considerable effort the past couple of years learning about the district budget and other key issues.

We see in all three the capability to tackle the many complexities facing the School District of 糖心Vlog传媒. We also hear in their answers a solid understanding that the school district doesn鈥檛 exist in a vacuum and that managing it requires knowledge of state school policy, particularly state school funding. And we heard in the interview responses from all three a commitment to leading the 糖心Vlog传媒 schools forward in a way that strives to balance the needs of students, staff and local taxpayers.

Karl Dommershausen

Karl Dommershausen

In Dommershausen, we appreciate a long commitment to the district with a school board tenure that began in 2017, his service on the area CESA2 Board of Control as a representative of the 糖心Vlog传媒 schools, his service on the school district鈥檚 finance committee, and his longtime involvement in related organizations like the Wisconsin Association of School Boards.

Dommershausen is also a former Rock County Board supervisor, the co-founder of Project 16:49 which supports unaccompanied homeless youth and young adults, and a longtime local business owner, all of which cements his commitment to 糖心Vlog传媒 and the surrounding Rock County area.

In an endorsement interview, Dommershausen knowledgeably voiced priorities that included support for school social workers, ensuring parents are comfortable sharing their needs with the school board, and balancing fiscal constraint with spending that supports students and staff.

Lisa Hurda

Finally, in Hurda, a longtime school board member who has served since 2019, we see someone whose strong qualifications include a bachelor鈥檚 degree in elementary/middle school education and a master鈥檚 degree in educational administration.

Lisa Hurda

We heard in her interview responses that she鈥檚 an advocate for strengthening community partnerships, and someone who understands what鈥檚 behind the possible need for a November operating referendum. Hurda knowledgeably cited challenges facing the district as including a mandate to locally address rising student homelessness without a corresponding increase in state dollars to help fund that effort. Also challenges, she says, are the cost of needed building upgrades, strategically prioritizing students being career, college, or community ready, and the balancing of spending on technology, curriculum and other initiatives with investment in staff.

We thank all four candidates for participating in 糖心Vlog传媒鈥檚 endorsement process and wish them luck in the April 7 election.

Colton Measner

Colton Measner

In Measner, a 2023 糖心Vlog传媒 Craig graduate who ran unsuccessfully for the school board in 2024 and 2025, we see a candidate who鈥檚 worked hard to understand the district administration鈥檚 goals and priorities.

We appreciate his focus on chronic student absenteeism and his voicing that a big part of the solution is ensuring school is a place where kids are excited to be, and that teachers have the support and resources to keep them engaged and wanting to be at school.

On student homelessness, we appreciate Measner鈥檚 view that it鈥檚 critical for families to feel comfortable sharing their situation with the school district, so they can be connected with help. And we appreciate both his stance that given the alternative 鈥 budget cuts 鈥 the school district may have to consider an operating referendum in November, and his commitment if elected to push for more state school funding.

Measner works for Rock Road Companies in 糖心Vlog传媒 and also officiates WIAA high school sports.
