The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled pitcher Emmet Sheehan as part of a series of roster moves Sunday, with the right-hander set to handle the bulk of their series finale against the San Francisco Giants. All four transactions involved Dodgers pitchers. They also recalled Kyle Hurt, placed Tarik Skubal on the bereavement list and optioned Seth Halvorsen to Triple-A Oklahoma City. Jack Dreyer starts as the Dodgers go for the sweep against their Bay Area rivals before giving way to Sheehan, who is 5-8 with a 4.79 ERA in 22 games this season.

Chicago Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman left Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds after being struck in the face by a foul ball while standing in the on-deck circle. In the fourth inning, Michael Busch fouled off a pitch from Reds right-hander Luis Mey that hit Bregman. He immediately jogged toward the Cubs dugout with his hand over his left eye. Bregman was escorted by training staff into the clubhouse, with blood visible on his face. Matt Shaw pinch-hit for him.

The AL West-leading Texas Rangers have put versatile right-hander Cal Quantrill on the 15-day injured list because of right lat tightness. The move came a day after Quantrill faced only four batters and threw 12 pitches in a start against Toronto. Hard-throwing right-hander Winston Santos was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock and joined the Rangers before the finale of their three-game series against Toronto. About an hour before the game, the Rangers said right fielder Brandon Nimmo was being scratched from the starting lineup because of illness.

The Philadelphia Phillies optioned reliever Orion Kerkering to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Sunday after he posted an 18.69 ERA in his four appearances this month.Kerkering gave up four runs in the eighth inning of Saturday’s 10-3 loss to the New York Mets. Kerkering established himself as one of the Phillies’ most reliable set-up men by going 13-7 with a 2.78 ERA and four saves over the previous two seasons. But he committed a season-ending throwing error in the 11th inning of Game 4 of the 2025 NL Division Series, when he tossed the ball over the head of catcher J.T. Realmuto trying to force Hyeseong Kim, who scored the winning run in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 2-1 win.

The Cincinnati Reds place right-hander Chase Burns on the 15-day injured list with a right groin strain, ending his season. Burns, an NL All-Star, felt discomfort after his start Friday. Reds manager Terry Francona says they are being cautious and decided not to push him for another start. The 23-year-old Burns has pitched 154 1/3 innings this season, with a 15-3 record and a 2.86 ERA. In roster moves Sunday, the Reds select right-hander Carson Spiers from Triple-A Louisville and designated outfielder TJ Friedl for assignment. Friedl batted .172 with four homers in 91 games.
