University students behind nearly two years of anti-government protests in Serbia have formally entered an election race before an early parliamentary vote next month challenging populist President Aleksandar Vucic. The youth movement on Monday submitted their election list to state election authorities after a joyful march through downtown Belgrade. Several thousand people joined the noisy gathering in support of the students. The Oct. 25 vote is seen as a major test for Vucic's party which has held a tight grip on power in Serbia for 14 years. The election will be held against the backdrop of heightened political tensions as the governing populists seek to hold on to power despite widespread popular discontent.
