“Widow’s Bay” has stormed the Emmy Awards, breaking a record for a comedy series with 14 awards including best comedy series and three acting wins. The first-season horror comedy was created by Katie Dippold about a New England island community reckoning with a centuries-old curse. It spoiled the going-away party for “Hacks,” which had gotten the most comedy nominations of any show in its fifth and final season. It broke the comedy record set last year by “The Studio” when it won 13. Star Matthew Rhys won best actor, Stephen Root won best supporting actor and Kate O’Flynn won best supporting actress. Dippold won for writing.

Sherri Shepherd plans to join the Broadway musical “Aladdin” as the Genie. The Daytime Emmy Award-winning talk show host will take on the role from Oct. 16 to Jan. 3. Shepherd says she’s thrilled to be part of the “Aladdin” family and wants children to feel inspired. She’s preparing for the high-energy role by taking dance and voice lessons. This will be her second trip to Broadway, having played the Evil Stepmother in “Cinderella” in 2014. Shepherd is seeking advice from Broadway friends to help her prepare for the role.

Authorities have fined two companies after a well-known Chinese comedian altered the lyrics of a patriotic song during a performance. The Culture and Tourism Bureau in Wuhan city said Monday that comedian Guo Degang's actions caused a "severe negative impact on society." They fined the company hosting Guo and the theater where he performed for violating commercial performance rules. Guo, a prominent performer, has not performed publicly since the incident, and several of his shows have been canceled.
