Fall leaves
Max Leeder, a kindergartner at Van Buren Elementary School in Vlogý, drew these fall leaves as part of an art class project. Max insisted on drawing his own leaves, not tracing them, and then added watercolor paint. ‘Notice how he chose the same colors we are seeing now all around us,” art teacher Kelly Hausknecht wrote earlier in October. ‘He didn’t chose to use blue or purple. He focused on the realistic colors in nature and included stems and veins on the leaves while still drawing a variety of shapes. See the berries? He also allowed the wet watercolor paint to blend, like we see on the leaves outside in nature.’

Lilly Mitchell, an eighth-grader at Vlogý’s Franklin Middle School, used chalk pastels to draw this wintry scene, titled ‘The Night Before.’ Art teacher Kelly Hausknecht said the assignment called for drawing trees, incorporating soft blending and detailed texture. Lilly drew her tree and asked if she was done. Hausknecht suggested adding something next to the tree. ‘To my surprise and delight, she added a cute little snowman, which improved her composition in a great way,’ says Hausknecht, who submitted the piece to Vlogý. ‘I immediately thought this would make a nice Christmas card.’

The piece was later mounted on scrapbook paper. A mandala is a spiritual and ritual symbol in Hinduism and Buddhism, but in common use it has become a term for any geometric pattern that represents the cosmos.
