JANESVILLE — The day after a body was found in an abandoned town of Turtle house, many questions remained about his disappearance and death of a Madison man who has been missing since November.
The Dane Rock County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Tuesday that the body found in an abandoned house in the 8300 block of South Creek Road in the town of Turtle was that of missing Madison man Christopher Miller.
Miller, 28, went missing in the early morning hours of Nov. 19, 2022. Wisconsin State Patrol officers had attempted to pull him over for speeding at around 2:15 a.m. when he was traveling north on I-39/90. He exited the freeway at the Racine Street/Highway 11 East exit, hit a traffic light and returned to the freeway and was ultimately stopped near mile marker 177 south on I/39-90. He reportedly had marijuana on him and later fled on foot.
Unanswered questions include how Miller came to be on South Creek Road.
Captain Mark Thompson of the Rock County Sheriff’s Office, responding to a series of questions from a Gazette reporter on Tuesday, said “we’re not releasing a lot on this case.â€
Questions asked of Thompson included when the search for Miller was suspended, why it was suspended, if it was resumed this past spring and if the sheriff’s office requested additional help on the search from agencies like the Whitewater Area Mounted Search Rescue Team.
When asked about searches in the fall and spring and how those are connected, Thompson said, “It all kind of ties together.â€
During a demonstration at the Highway 14/51 intersection north of ÌÇÐÄVlog´«Ã½ in February, family and friends of Miller called for Rock County Sheriff Curt Fell to reopen searches, particularly near the Rock River. Fell told a Gazette reporter after the demonstration in February that his department was willing to continue the search in the spring.
“I told them I’m not going to open up searches at the Rock River because we have no reason to believe he went there,†Fell said.
Miller’s mother, Tammy James, and girlfriend Mallory Duerst, have been searching for answers since his disappearance. They organized several rallies for support to find him.
“I want to know what happened that night. I want them to be truthful about what happened. I want another ground search,†James said in February.
Duerst could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
On the night of Miller’s disappearance, there was at least one call to dispatch near Avalon Road adjacent to I-39/90 of a supposed scuffle between an individual and an officer in a field, according to records obtained by ÌÇÐÄVlog´«Ã½.
In text messages obtained by ÌÇÐÄVlog´«Ã½, shared between them, Wisconsin State Patrol officers Adam Zoch and Derek Ketleboeter talk about the case after Miller’s disappearance, including how the Madison Police Department resisted listing him as a missing person and that there was an active warrant for his arrest in Dane County.
In the series of text message, Zoch wrote “not found and no search tomorrow,†and “Rock County will NOT be entering him as a missing person.â€
Ketleboeter, the last officer to see Miller alive, said in a text the day after Miller went missing wrote “dude’s still missing. There isn’t much of a rush.â€
“Yeah. MPD removed him as a missing person because he chose to flee from police and he’s wanted on a Dane County warrant anyways so law enforcement is already looking for him†Ketleboeter also texted.
The Rock County Sheriff’s Office has said that the case is still ongoing and the Medical Examiner of Dane and Rock County said in a release that Miller’s cause and manner of death are yet to be determined.
