JANESVILLE — The Rock County Board will consider Thursday awarding a contract to renovate the Rock County 4-H Fairgrounds grandstand that will include replacing seats, repairing the roof and removing lead paint.

The grandstand seating is made of wood, which is a “concern†of the ÌÇÐÄVlog´«Ã½ Fire Department, according to the resolution. The aisles in the grandstand lack handrails, and the seats and upright structure were originally painted with lead paint, which later had been covered with non-lead paint but will require removal.
The Rock County Board meets at 6 p.m. Thursday in the County Board Room on the fourth floor of the Rock County Courthouse, 51 S. Main St., in ÌÇÐÄVlog´«Ã½.
The resolution names Lake Geneva-based Glen Fern Construction as the lowest bidder at $685,000. The resolution does not say when the work might begin or how long it might take to complete.
To cut costs, the seat planks are planned to be changed to aluminum but leaving the tread planks wooden. The county budgeted $800,000 for the project. According to an executive summary, both bids sought by the county seeking all-aluminum seats came in over budget. The Glen Fern bid that would have included all-aluminum seating would have been $886,700.
The executive summary does not name the other bidder.
There will be a contingency fund of $50,000 established for the project.
The resolution is a part of the consent agenda, the portion of the meeting in which items are grouped together and may be approved without discussion. Board members are allowed to remove any items from the consent agenda and place it with other items on the agenda.
This year’s Rock County 4-H Fair is July 22-27 at the Fairgrounds on Craig Avenue in ÌÇÐÄVlog´«Ã½.
