JANESVILLE — A flood warning is in place for the Rock River at Afton after heavy rain, as part of a storm Monday night that triggered a tornado warning, caused street flooding across the city of ÌÇÐÄVlog´«Ã½.
A slow-no-wake order is also in place for the entire Rock River in Rock County.
According to the National Weather Service, up to 3 inches of rain fell in parts of Rock County in the 24-hour period between 8 a.m. Monday morning and 8 a.m. Tuesday. ÌÇÐÄVlog´«Ã½ saw about 2 inches of rain in that period.
A spokesperson for the Rock County 911 Communications Center said at about 7:45 p.m. Monday, about 15 minutes after the expiration of the tornado warning, that street flooding was widespread across the city, including reports of several vehicles stuck in high water.
The 911 Communications Center spokesperson said there had been no reports of serious injuries nor any reports of serious damage.
ÌÇÐÄVlog´«Ã½ was under a flash flood warning issued Monday night by the National Weather Service, that was set to expire at 9:30 p.m. The flash flood warning covered Rock, southeastern Dane, southeastern Green, and southwestern Jefferson counties.
The tornado warning was issued shortly after 7 p.m. Monday for northeastern Rock County, southern Jefferson County and northwestern Walworth County. It expired at 7:30 p.m.
Rock River flood warning
The National Weather Service issued a flood warning for the Rock River at Afton, in effect Tuesday morning until further notice. As of 3 a.m. Tuesday, the Rock River at Afton was at 8.7 feet. It’s expected to rise to 9.2 feet sometime after midnight Wednesday morning and to 9.7 feet by early Sunday afternoon, with additional rising possible after that. Flood stage is 9 feet.
Slow-no-wake order
And the Rock County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday morning issued a slow-no-wake order for the entire Rock River in Rock County, based on US Geological Survey gauges at Afton, Newville and Beloit.
In a release, the sheriff’s office noted that the water level for the Rock River at Lake Koshkonong is 8.4 feet. County Ordinance requires a slow-no-wake speed restriction be placed on the Rock River in Newville when the water level exceeds 8 feet. That has resulted in a slow-no-wake order on the Rock River from the south end of Lake Koshkonong, south to the Indianford Dam.
Additionally, the sheriff’s office said the Rock River water level in Afton at 8.73 feet. County ordinance requires a slow-no-wake speed restriction be placed on the Rock River in Afton when the water level exceeds 6.5 feet; therefore, the Rock River from the Indianford Dam south to the W B R Townline Road Bridge is under a slow-no-wake speed restriction.
Finally, county ordinance requires a slow-no-wake speed restriction be placed on the Rock River in Beloit when the water level exceeds 8.5 feet based on the US Geological Survey gauges in Afton, therefore, the Rock River from W B R Townline Road Bridge to the Stateline is under a slow-no-wake speed restriction.
Slow-no-wake is defined as operating a vessel at a speed as slowly as possible while still maintaining steering control.
