JANESVILLE — The Catholic Diocese of Madison is pulling the plug on its support of the Boy Scouts of America at the end of next year.
The Diocese of Madison covers Columbia, Dane, Grant, Green, Green Lake, Iowa, Jefferson, Lafayette, Marquette, Rock, and Sauk counties in south- central Wisconsin.
Kris Kranenburg, the director of communications for the diocese, told ÌÇÐÄVlog´«Ã½ Monday that the decision, effective Dec. 31, 2024, was tied to the Boy Scouts of America’s ongoing bankruptcy process.
The BSA exited Chapter 11 bankruptcy in April. During the process, the it committed to a restructuring process that led to a $2.4 billion settlement of sex abuse cases involving scout leaders.
Kranenburg would not directly confirm whether the Madison diocese’s revocation of support was tied to the sex abuse cases.
She said the decision was made at “the diocesan level after the requisite consultation†and that Madison parishes will not renew Boy Scouts of America charters, that have allowed them to serve as chartered organizations.
According to Kranenberg, the timing of the decision, to not be effective until the end of 2024, will allow troops, packs and crews affected to find alternative charters.
Some Diocese of Madison parishes and entities host Boy Scouts events and in other cases there are usage agreements between Boy Scouts organizations and parishes. Between now and the end of 2024, there can only be limited-term agreements or agreements that must expire prior to the start of 2025.
The decision follows the Diocese of Green Bay’s decision to sever ties with the Boy Scouts in 2022; the Archdiocese of Rockford followed suit earlier this year.
The diocese will still have a Catholic Committee on Scouting, Kranenburg said. She also said the diocese “may occasionally host a diocesan-leval event†like “a diocesan Mass to foster and promote Catholic scouting aspects and will support individual scout formation for scouts to achieve Catholic BSA badges.â€
The Boy Scouts of America Glacier’s Edge Council Scout Executive Ron Timmons, based in Madison, did not respond to ÌÇÐÄVlog´«Ã½â€™s request for comment.
Neither did multiple individuals affiliated with the Milton-area Boy Scouts respond to ÌÇÐÄVlog´«Ã½ on Monday.
