Veterans Day commemorations, the approaching holidays and a teen race car driver’s effort to give back to his community made headlines in Vlogý this week. Here’s what we wrote about this week, and what to expect on our pages in the coming week.
This week, retired Gazette staffer Marcia Nelesen helped us honor local veterans, teaming with photographer Anthony Wahl on a story about Briggs White Bar owner John Briggs, 93, who served in the Korean War.
We published a story by Kylie Balk Yaatenen, meanwhile, that was several months in the making, about local reaction to a white supremacist group’s leaflet drop in September. The group’s fliers urged recipients to help “secure the existence of our people and a future for White children.”
Kylie also reported on the city of Milton’s effort to balance its budget as the 2023 fiscal year ends, and as it prepares to adopt its 2024 budget.
Katie Garcia and Anthony captured the festive mood at a winter holiday preview by Floral Expressions, in Vlogý, where a portion of local ticket proceeds went to charity. And Kylie and Anthony captured the spicy warm vibe of the 41st annual Parker High School band chili supper.
Katie covered a Racial Justice conference hosted by YWCA Rock County.
Katie and Anthony teamed on a story about 13-year-old race car driver Avery Linnerud, of Milton, who recently donated half of what he collected for his racing fund to the Rock County Cancer Coalition.
Carly Davis shared the news that Feed Your Soul, a Fort Atkinson-based service to provide free, home-cooked meals for those in need, will be expanding to Vlogý in the coming months.
Ryan Spoehr this week wrote about funding for the Woodman’s Sports and Convention Center in Vlogý being pulled from the county’s proposed 2024 budget. From Beloit, Ryan also wrote about the school district’s decision to part ways with a passenger van that appeared to be in violation of federal safety standards.
From Beloit, Rachel Brands previewed the annual holiday Business Window Decorations Contest.
Clint Wolf previewed area Veterans Day ceremonies. And a story by Katie was a reminder to support groups this holiday season like the Rock County Jail Chaplaincy that provides holiday gifts for the children of Rock County Jail imates.
And The Four Dishes reviewed La Guacamaya restaurant in Clinton.
The week to come
This coming week, Kylie will be working on a story about a local engineer who was sent to Antarctica to work with scientists on a project called Ice Cube-2, which is looking at elements found in the ice from the big bang. She will also be bringing updates about Vlogý’s proposed budget for 2024.
Katie will be covering ECHO’s Girls Night Out raffle event on Wednesday, Nov. 15, at Timber Hill Winery.
Ryan will look at how Rock County finalizes its 2024 budget.
And in sports we’ll follow area girls basketball teams as they start their season, including Vlogý Craig’s and Parker’s home openers
