Some new U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers started working before passing background checks and had problems in their past. ICE announced in January that it completed an unprecedented hiring spree, adding 12,000 officers and agents to double its force. Their mission is to help carry out President Donald Trump鈥檚 mass deportation campaign. But the speed with which they were brought on to the payroll, to jobs considered important for national security, has raised alarm. The Associated Press found one new ICE hire had filed for bankruptcy twice and worked for six law enforcement agencies in three years. Another was accused of lying in a police report to justify a felony charge against an innocent woman. A third quit his only prior policing job after three weeks.

Australia鈥檚 most decorated living veteran has been granted bail 10 days after he was charged with committing war crimes in Afghanistan. The judge ruled Friday that Ben Roberts-Smith had established exceptional circumstances to justify his release from custody. Prosecutors had opposed bail and argued there was a risk he would flee Australia or interfere with witnesses and evidence. The charges against him allege he was responsible for the unlawful killings of five Afghans in Uruzgan province in 2009 and 2012. Roberts-Smith testified during a separate civil trial that he never killed an unarmed Afghan and he denied ever committing a war crime.

An Atlanta man has been charged in a string of attacks over a matter of hours that left two women dead and a man in critical condition. One of the women, Lauren Bullis, worked for the Department of Homeland Security. Her killing on Monday led Homeland Secretary Markwayne Mullin to issue a statement raising concerns that the 26-year-old defendant, U.K.-native Olaolukitan Adon Abel, was granted U.S. citizenship in 2022, when Democrat Joe Biden was president. Mullin catalogued a litany of the defendant鈥檚 previous alleged crimes, but he didn't specify whether they happened before Adon Abel was granted citizenship. Authorities are looking into whether the victims were targeted at random.
