A highly anticipated NCAA basketball matchup between Duke and Michigan has been canceled because of broadcast rights issues. Duke will now play Texas Tech on December 21 at Madison Square Garden, according to media reports. The original game was set to stream on Amazon Prime as part of Duke's three-game deal. The matchup was initially planned for Madison Square Garden, then moved to Miami, before being canceled. Both Michigan and Duke were top seeds in the 2026 NCAA tournament, with Michigan winning the championship. Duke's Cameron Boozer and three Michigan starters were high NBA draft picks.

Minnesota coach Niko Medved has received a one-year contract extension with a slight raise after a promising first season at his alma mater. The university board of regents approved the contract amendment this week at its regular monthly meeting to give Medved a $100,000 pay bump on top of the $100,000 annual increase in his initial six-year deal. Medved is now signed through the 2031-32 season. He will make $3.2 million in 2026-27. That ranks 17th out of 18 head coaches in the Big Ten. The Gophers went 15-18 overall and 8-12 in Big Ten play in Medved’s first year.

Michigan has agreed to a two-year contract with men's basketball coach Mike Boynton, removing the interim tag he was given after Dusty May left to lead the NBA's Dallas Mavericks. Athletic director Warde Manuel announced the move on Friday, going for some continuity on the coaching staff for the defending national champions. Boynton has been able to help the Wolverines retain their roster, which includes nine newcomers. Boynton was 119-109 over seven seasons at Oklahoma State, which fired him two years ago.

Nikola Kusturica of Serbia is joining UCLA's basketball program this fall. He joins Gunars Grinvalds of Latvia, along with center Javonte Floyd from Atlanta and guard/forward Joe Philon III from Tampa, Florida, in the Bruins' freshman class. Kusturica, a 6-foot-9 guard/forward, turned 17 in April and is an early prospect as the No. 1 pick in the 2028 NBA draft. He has played with FC Barcelona’s youth team since 2023 and helped them win the U18 Adidas Next Generation tournament championship in May.

An Ohio judge has granted a preliminary injunction for 24 men’s and women’s college basketball players suing the NCAA to be eligible, claiming the new age-based model unfairly shuts them out of further competition. Judge Christopher Wagner said Thursday the NCAA eligibility rules have been applied in an arbitrary and capricious manner. Wagner’s ruling allows the athletes in the lawsuit an opportunity to enter the transfer portal. He scheduled a conference for Aug. 4 to prepare for a trial. Downton has filed similar lawsuits against the NCAA on behalf of nearly 30 men’s and women’s basketball players.

Basketball coach Shane Burcar has opted to go big in his eighth season at Northern Arizona. The Lumberjacks added four players at least 6-foot-10 to their roster, highlighted by 7-footer Dylan Anderson. A two-time Arizona player of the year, Anderson has bounced around since playing his first two seasons at Arizona but could have a starring role at NAU. The Lumberjacks won just 10 games in an injury-filled 2025-26 season, a year after playing in the postseason for the first time in 10 years. The step back has put added pressure on Burcar, who's in the last year of his contract and with a new athletic director at NAU.

St. John’s forward Donnie Freeman will miss next season with an Achilles injury after getting hurt during a workout this week. It’s a significant blow to the Red Storm, who landed Freeman in the transfer portal from Syracuse this offseason and were expecting him to be a top player on the 2026-27 team. The rising junior was injured Monday and had surgery on his right Achilles tendon, the school announced Wednesday night. The 6-foot-9 Freeman averaged 15.3 points and 7.5 rebounds in 37 games over two seasons at Syracuse. He was rated one of the nation’s top recruits in the high school class of 2024.
