Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay says Aaron Donald is still determining whether he is ready and able to return to the team. The Rams will welcome the superstar defensive lineman if he decides to end his two-year retirement. McVay insists he has no idea whether the team’s career sacks leader will resume his career while the Rams reported to their training camp at Loyola Marymount University. Donald anchored the Rams’ defense for a decade before he retired somewhat abruptly in March 2024. He apparently began to entertain the idea of a comeback after the Rams acquired pass rusher Myles Garrett in a trade with Cleveland early last month.
Alex Bowman considered walking away from NASCAR after this season. A series of discouraging results convinced him to give racing one more shot. One day after the 33-year-old Arizona native announced he’ll retire after the 2027 season, Bowman explained why he decided to embark on a grand farewell tour with Hendrick Motorsports next year. He wants a chance to finish his career in style and then he wants to pursue his aspirations beyond racing. Bowman spoke before Friday's first Brickyard 400 practice in Indianapolis.
NASCAR driver Alex Bowman will retire from full-time racing following the 2027 season. Bowman had been in the final year of his contract at powerhouse Hendrick Motorsports. He signed a one-year extension before announcing his future plans on Thursday. The 33-year-old Bowman missed four races earlier this season because of vertigo and also was sidelined in 2022 because of a concussion and the following year because of a back injury. He says “the sport asks a lot of you, and I’ve learned it’s important to listen to your body and make the right choices for yourself.”
World Cup referee Anthony Taylor has announced his retirement. The 47-year-old Englishman refereed more than 800 matches in the English Premier League, domestic cups, European club competitions and major internationals. His final game was the round of 16 match at the World Cup on July 6, when the eventual champion Spain eliminated Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal 1-0. Taylor says “Officiating at the elite level has been an immense privilege, but the pressure is intense and the scrutiny is constant. The time is now right to step aside and look forward to transitioning to the next chapter of my career.”
Scotland’s 43-year-old goalkeeper Craig Gordon has announced his retirement from soccer after being the oldest among more than 1,250 players picked for the World Cup. The Heart of Midlothian and former Celtic and Sunderland goalie confirmed the news in a video message on social media. Gordon was a backup in Scotland's three World Cup games to Angus Gunn. Gunn last week joined San Jose Earthquakes in Major League Soccer. Gordon made his Scotland debut in 2004. His 84 games are fifth on the national team’s all-time list.
Paralympics great Sarah Storey has retired from competitive racing at age 48 instead of training for a 10th Games in Los Angeles in 2028. The 19-time Paralympics gold medalist won her first titles for Britain in swimming at Barcelona in 1992. Storey completed her fourth straight sweep of cycling’s road race and time trial at Paris in 2024. She's told British broadcaster BBC she now wants to help improve the quality and visibility of Para-sport. Storey was born with a disabled left hand because her arm got entangled with the umbilical cord in the womb.

The NHL’s career leader in goals didn’t formally commit to returning in 2026-27 until last week. So it was perhaps no surprise that Alex Ovechkin remained noncommittal on whether this is going to be his swan song with the Washington Capitals. Ovechkin said his wife suggested he play “one more year, or maybe two years, I don’t know” — so if anyone was expecting him to announce a retirement tour for this season, that did not happen Monday. Ovechkin committed last week to returning this coming season.
