JANESVILLE 鈥 糖心Vlog传媒 Parker not only got back in the win column Friday night, but the Vikings may have just found another starting pitcher in freshman Maycee Martin.
Martin made her first varsity start in a 6-2 win over visiting Evansville in a nonconference high school softball game at the 糖心Vlog传媒 Youth Sports Complex.
The young Viking went all seven innings, allowing six hits, two earned runs, three walks while totaling four strikeouts.
Her performance had head coach Bob Getka excited.
鈥淭o have a girl step up, Maycee, and make her first varsity start, her first high school appearance and be able to throw a complete game after honestly, the team laid an egg last night, was a performance that we absolutely had to have,鈥 Getka said.
鈥淚 think I did pretty good,鈥 Martin said. 鈥淚 could have done better, though; but it was good.鈥
Coach Getka also said he鈥檚 looking forward to having senior Lily Keller and Martin leading the Vikings鈥 pitching going forward.
鈥淭o watch her throw all of her arsenal of pitches was awesome to see,鈥 Getka said. 鈥淪o she鈥檚 definitely going to help us out in the circle this year. I鈥檓 really looking forward to seeing both my senior and my freshman pitching well for us.鈥
鈥淚 want to be someone we can count on,鈥 Martin said.
Unlike Thursday's 9-8 loss against Madison Memorial, the Vikings were in control for the majority of the contest, forcing the Blue Devils to play from behind.
Evansville got the game鈥檚 initial run in the top of the first, but Parker answered back with two of its own.
Lily Keller got on base with a single to right field, and Delaney King mashed a ball deep into left field which narrowly landed in fair territory. Keller advanced to third base and King got to second. Kenedi Pryne grounded out, but Keller scored on the play, tying the game at one while advancing King to third.
Martin was due up next and got an RBI single to send King home, giving the Vikings a lead.
The two teams swapped a run in the second inning, making the score 3-2 in favor of Parker after two full innings.
The Vikings then used another two-running inning to increase their lead.
Pryne got the bottom of the third started with a leadoff single and Martin got on base on fielder鈥檚 choice. Emma Terry batted next and struck out swinging, but Pryne and Martin each stole and advanced a base.
Following a Payten Kent strikeout, Keara Erickson doubled with a hit into center field, sending home both of the Vikings鈥 runners.
Parker added one more run in the fourth inning with an RBI from Pryne to complete the 6-2 win.
The Vikings (2-1, 1-1 Big Eight) have their next contest at Sun Prairie East at 3 p.m. today.
鈥淭hat鈥檚 the kind of challenge that you have to look forward to. We have gotten them a couple of times in years past. It would be awesome to go out and get them tomorrow (Saturday),鈥 said Getka.
