BELOIT — The Beloit Sky Carp have struggled mightily in recent weeks to score with runners in scoring position.
On Thursday night, the Sky Carp struggled mightily to even get runners into scoring position as they were no-hit into the eighth inning and fell to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 5-0 at ABC Supply Stadium.
Beloit did draw eight walks throughout the course of the night, with Jake Thompson and Ynmanol Marinez recording a team-high two bases on balls, the Sky Carp were in danger of being no-hit until Cristhian Rodriguez started the bottom of the eighth with an infield single to the shortstop. He advanced to second on a balk, but Javier Sanoja struck out and Thompson and Yiddi Cappe each flew out.
Joseph Hernandez threw the first 3 1-3 no-hit frames while walking two and striking out four. Stieven Cruz earned the win after going 4 3-4 innings and allowing just one hit while throwing four bases on balls and striking out two.
Sky Carp starter Gabe Bierman struggled in 2 2-3 innings as he allowed two earned runs on three hits while striking out three.
The Timber Rattlers got the first run on Gibson in the first inning as Robert Moore and Brock Wilken both singled before pulling off a double steal. Hendry Mendez grounded out to score Moore and make it 1-0.
Wisconsin bumped it up to 2-0 in the second after Matthew Wood walked, stole second and scored on a single by Eric Brown Jr.
Brown Jr. had an RBI single of his own off Tyler Eckberg in the fourth and Moore’s second RBI single of the night made it 4-0.
The Sky Carp had two on after two walks in the sixth but Marinez grounded into a double play. They loaded the bases in the ninth after Zach Zubia doubled and Marinez and Barstad both walked. But Rodriguez struck out to seal the shutout.
Edgar Sanchez threw 1 1-3 no-run innings for Beloit while Breidy Encarnacion tossed the final two frames without allowing a run.
The Sky Carp (24-33) will continue the final homestand of the season Friday at 6:35 p.m.
