WHITEWATER — The top-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team kept its scalding bats hot Friday, hitting six home runs in sweeping a doubleheader, 14-2 and 9-0, against visiting UW-Eau Claire in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup at Prucha Field.
The Warhawks (13-0, 4-0) had hit another seven home runs during a doubleheader sweep of the Blugolds (6-9, 0-4 WIAC), Thursday.
Friday, the Warhawks turned a close game one contest into a blow out with with three consecutive four-run innings.
In the fourth, Andy Thies led off with a single, followed by a Daryl Jackson home run. The Warhawks followed Jackson’s home run up with four consecutive singles, scoring another two runs to go up 6-0.
In the fifth, Dominik McVay drove home one run with a two-out single and Aaron Holland cleared the bases with a 3-run home run to put the Warhawks up 10-0.
The sixth started with a solo home run from Eli Frank and was capped off by Brett Sommer’s 3-run home run to give the Warhawks a 14-0 lead.
In game two, the Warhawks hit two more home runs early. Holland led off the game with a solo shot with Thies hit a 2-run home run in the second to give the Warhawks an early 3-0 lead.
The Warhawks added four more runs in the third and fourth innings, highlighted by Sam Paden’s 2-RBI double, a sacrifice fly from Matt Scolan, and another RBI double for Frank.
The Warhawk defense got out of a few jams throughout the shutout, stranding nine total Blugold baserunners.
Alex Najera capped off the sweep with a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth to give the Warhawks a 9-0 win.
Ben Lee picked up the win in the second game. Lee threw five innings with a career-high 10 strikeouts.
The Warhawks have a nonconference break before taking on UW-River Falls next weekend. The Warhawks will play NAIA St. Xavier Wednesday.
