JANESVILLE — A woman who was found dead kneeling on a tree near Peace Park on April 17, has been identified by the Rock County Medical Examiner’s Department.
Kiersten Hansen, 22, of ÌÇÐÄVlog´«Ã½, was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy was completed on Friday, April 19, confirming her cause of death as homicidal trauma by firearm.
Logan Barclay, a 23-year-old ÌÇÐÄVlog´«Ã½ man, has been arrested for allegedly killing Hansen, his ex-girlfriend and mother of their 1-year-old son. He faces a possible charge of first degree intentional homicide, modified as domestic violence. He is currently in custody and will make an initial appearance in Rock County Circuit Court on Friday, April 26 at 3 p.m.
According to the criminal complaint, Barclay allegedly confessed to walking in the woods with Hansen on the evening of April 16 and shooting her in the stomach after arguing about her being pregnant again. She was found by two women walking the trails near the 1400 block of Afton Road in the afternoon of April 17.
ÌÇÐÄVlog´«Ã½ police officers responded to the scene at 12:45 p.m. Hansen was found without her phone or wallet.
On April 18, Rock County Child Protective Services contacted the ÌÇÐÄVlog´«Ã½ Police Department for a welfare check on a 22-year-old woman who had missed two appointments, which was “extremely unusual for her.†Hansen and Barclay have a 1-year-old son. Barclay’s parents have custody of the child.
Hansen’s mother told officers she had last seen her her daughter on April 16 when Barclay was going to pick her up. She said they’ve been together “on and off†for two years and “do not always get along.â€
Barclay initially told officers that he had not seen Hansen since Sunday. He said they had taken a walk and talked about her possibly being pregnant again. He said if Hansen was pregnant, he would be the father. He said she was “obsessed with him.â€
In an interview with police on the evening of April 18, Barclay said he was not ready to be a father and had wanted Hansen to get an abortion. She had kept their son, which strained their relationship. When Hansen struggled to care for him, CPS got involved and the baby was placed with Barclay’s parents.
After an officer confronted Barclay that his information didn’t line up, Barclay allegedly admitted to seeing Hanson on April 16. He said he picked her up and took her to the trail by his house before bringing her back home again. The detective told Barclay that they knew she didn’t return home that night.
Barclay then allegedly confessed to being angry with Hansen for being pregnant again and not wanting to give the baby up.
Barclay said she “would not stop talking about the pregnancy.†He said he “broke†and “snapped,†pulling out a gun, shooting her in the stomach before walking away. He said it was an accident. He also said he texted Hansen threatening messages to kill the baby, but that he had deleted them off his phone.
He threw her phone near her apartment then went to hang out with friends. An officer found her phone in a dumpster at her apartment under a garbage bag. Officers also found a .22 handgun disassembled in Barclay’s home.
Friends of Barclay told officers they had seen him on the evening of April 16 and he did not “appear to be scared or worried,†they said.
A GoFundMe has been created to help with Hansen’s funeral costs. It is at: -celebration-of-life.
Hansen’s pregnancy had not been confirmed as of Tuesday afternoon. This is an ongoing investigation by the ÌÇÐÄVlog´«Ã½ Police Department and Rock County Medical Examiner’s Department.
