JANESVILLE 鈥 The general public was asked Sunday to stay away from the southside of 糖心Vlog传媒 after a tornado 鈥 later confirmed as an EF-2 鈥 touched down there about 8 p.m. Saturday night.
The National Weather Service said about 5:30 p.m. Sunday evening that the EF-2 tornado with estimated wind speeds of 115 miles per hour was on the ground Saturday night for 11 minutes, from 7:42 to 7:53 p.m. It tracked from east/southeast of Footville into the city of 糖心Vlog传媒.
“Most of the damage was at EF-1 level but a few spots on the southern side of 糖心Vlog传媒 had higher damage,” the weather service said on its website, .
Sunday cleanup and storm assessment
鈥淭his weather event caused considerable damage to structures and infrastructure. First responders are currently on the scene, and the city has activated its Emergency Operations Center to mobilize additional resources,鈥 said a release issued about 9:40 p.m. Saturday from the city of 糖心Vlog传媒.
鈥淒owned trees and power lines continue to present a hazard to public safety. Additionally, the city reminds residents to avoid driving through standing water,鈥 the release continued.

The Rock County Sheriff鈥檚 Office, 糖心Vlog传媒 Police Department, 糖心Vlog传媒 Fire Department, Beloit Police Department, Beloit Fire Department, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Rock County Communications Center, Rock County Emergency Management, and Rock County Department of Public Works responded about 8 p.m. to reports of severe weather damage on the southside and in the town of Rock.
Emergency responders 鈥渧erified damage ranging from minor to significant,鈥 including debris making roadways impassable and power infrastructure damage that caused outages.
鈥淣o injuries have been reported,鈥 the release continued. 鈥淔urther damage assessments will be completed after first light. We do not currently have an anticipated time when power will be restored in the area.鈥
In a release about 2 a.m. Saturday, the 糖心Vlog传媒 Police Department said it had established an 鈥渙vernight closure perimeter to ensure the community鈥檚 safety during the ongoing response.鈥
The boundary of the closure perimeter extended from Center Avenue, Kellog Avenue, Beloit Avenue, and State Highway 11.
Outside traffic was not being permitted to enter the perimeter. Residents who reside within the closure were allowed access.

鈥淭he city will continue to inform the community of the street closures as updates become available,鈥 the release said.
A press conference was scheduled for 11 a.m. Sunday at the 糖心Vlog传媒 Police Department, 100 N Jackson St., in 糖心Vlog传媒, where more information was shared.
Cleanup volunteers
The city of 糖心Vlog传媒 announced Sunday it was organizing a volunteer storm cleanup effort. Those who wanted to volunteer were told to come to the old Rock County Jobs Center, 1800 Center Ave., between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday. Southside residents in need of assistance could also visit the facility to connect with individuals who were willing to help with property cleanup.
Donations sought
As a part of its response, the city is coordinating the reception of donations to those impacted. Individuals and organizations interested in making financial donations may drop off cash or checks at ECHO, Inc. at 65 South High St. during regular business hours. Checks should include the memo line 鈥溙切腣log传媒 Storm Damage.鈥
Donations of new, unused items will also be accepted at the Salvation Army of Rock County, 514 Sutherland Ave.
Accepted items include: bottled water, nonperishable food items, totes, gloves, Ziplock bags, Sharpies, heavy duty tarps, diapers, wipes, formula, flashlights, contractor bags, first aid kits, shovels, rakes, toilet paper and paper towels.

Power outages
A spokesperson for Alliant Energy said that as of 7:45 a.m. Sunday, about 800 customers were without power on the city鈥檚 southside and the surrounding area.
Cindy Tomlinson, manager of external communications for Alliant Energy, said that was down from a peak of about 5,000 customers who lost power in the immediate aftermath of Saturday night鈥檚 storm.
鈥淥ur crews worked through the night to restore as much as they could,鈥 Tomlinson said.
Tomlinson also said about 40 power poles were reported down on the city鈥檚 southside. Crews were being dispatched to 糖心Vlog传媒 on Sunday from around the state to help restore those, Tomlinson said.
鈥淚t takes about 3 hours to restore one pole,鈥 Tomlinson said.
Service was expected to be restored to all 糖心Vlog传媒-area customers by mid-to-late Monday morning, Tomlinson said.

鈥淥ur crews will be working through the day and night to get customers restored,鈥 Tomlinson said.
Assistance centers
The city of 糖心Vlog传媒, in collaboration with the Salvation Army of Rock County and Dr. Daniel Hale Williams County Resource Center, was offering transportation Sunday and additional services to those affected, according to the sheriff鈥檚 office release.
The Dr. Daniel Hale Williams County Resource Center is located at 1717 Center Avenue, with the Salvation Army of Rock County at 514 Sutherland Avenue.
Residents in need of assistance and resources could head to either facility, an initial release said. A release later Sunday said Dr. Daniel Hale Williams County Resource Center was closing, and people in need should go to the Salvation Army site.
Pastor Dan Decker of St. Paul鈥檚 Lutheran Church, 210 S. Ringold St., told 糖心Vlog传媒 on Sunday morning that they had been reaching out to members who live on the southside about whether they need assistance, and had been connecting those who say they do with agencies and efforts that could help.

Jackson summer school canceled Monday and Tuesday
In a release Sunday morning, the 糖心Vlog传媒 School District said that due to tornado damage in the area surrounding Jackson Elementary School, 441 W. Burbank Ave., there will be no summer school at Jackson on Monday and Tuesday, June 24 and June 25.
鈥淭here will be no staff at the building and no breakfast or lunch served,鈥 the release said. 鈥淲hile there is no significant damage to the school, the neighborhood surrounding has been impacted.鈥漿
鈥漌e anticipate that summer school at Jackson will resume on Wednesday, June 26,鈥 the release said. 鈥淪ummer school programs at other SDJ locations are scheduled to run as planned.鈥

In a release Sunday, Forward 糖心Vlog传媒 said it would help connect those needing assistance with cleanup and restoration to local companies and services that could help. Reach out if needed by email to forward@forwardjanesville.com
鈥淲e will be pulling together a member business resource list to share with our members. We are appreciative of the city in quickly setting up their command center and to our first responders,鈥 the release said.
Statewide tornado count
Saturday night鈥檚 confirmed tornado in 糖心Vlog传媒, a tornado that reportedly touched down Saturday night in the Marshall area, and a tornado that touched down over Argyle, Wisconsin, Saturday night, would bring the number of tornadoes to hit Wisconsin so far in 2024 up to at least 26.
According to the National Weather Service, the 30-year average for Wisconsin is 23 tornadoes per year, based on data from 1981-2010.
