MILTON — The city of Milton is reconstructing — and reconfiguring — where North John Paul and Serns roads now connect, with the hope that it will improve safety.
A city of Milton plan shows the city will move the terminus of Serns Road a tenth of a mile north, and extend Sunset Drive to the west. Once the project is completed, the city will eliminate the intersection of Serns and John Paul roads altogether.
State traffic counts show John Paul and Serns roads see about 1,600 vehicles a day. The state does not have crash data on the intersection immediately available.
The city owns a triangle of land it has annexed from the town of Milton that extends from the intersection north to East Sunset and eastward to North Serns Road.
The reconfiguration is part of a $3.7 million project that includes sidewalk and street reconstruction and sewer and water replacement along Northside Drive, Pheasant Ridge, and Badger Lane.
The city and the town of Milton entered an intergovernmental agreement in 2009 aimed at supporting improvements and annexation that would help improve the John Paul-Serns Road connection.
The city agreed to cover construction costs.
When construction is complete, Sunset will extend beyond John Paul Road and into the piece of land, which is a field. It will extend to and across North Serns. Then there will be an option to turn south onto a new addition of Lukas Lane.
This will involve vacating Serns Road from John Paul Road to the extended Sunset Drive. The portion of Lukas Lane that currently curves to Serns Road will be relocated to the north to the new W. Sunset Dr.
After completion, Sunset will have stop signs at Serns Road and at John Paul and on Lukas Lane.
The project is underway. The city thinks it will wrap up about Oct. 16.
Two developers have property going forward on the land. One, Dickens and Partners, will have land along John Paul Road. City Administrator Paul Hensch told ÌÇÐÄVlog´«Ã½ it would “likely be housing/residential.â€
Another developer involved is Next Generation, and Hensch did not elaborate on what they might do.
The city has created a new voting ward, the 13th ward, for the land that annexed. No one lives in the land currently. The area is in the county’s sixth district, a previously unincorporated town area. That requires the city to designate an additional ward.
