JANESVILLE 鈥 Moments before Wisconsin Supreme Court Candidate Brad Schimel arrived to speak at the Rock County Republican Party headquarters in 糖心Vlog传媒 on Monday, protesters began gathering across the street.
The 鈥淪top Brad Schimel Rally,鈥 was meant to counter the pro-Schimel 鈥淪ave Wisconsin Rally鈥 planned at the county鈥檚 GOP headquarters. About a dozen protesters together chanted, 鈥淗ey hey, ho ho, Brad Schimel鈥檚 got to go,鈥 and posted a giant for-sale sign with Schimel鈥檚 name on it.
They also held up smaller signs that read 鈥淰eterans for Crawford,鈥 鈥淏ought and Paid For,鈥 and 鈥淪hady Schimel for Sale,鈥 as well as an oversized cardboard check with 鈥14 million鈥 written on it. Also participating in the demonstration was a man wearing a ball cap, a sport coat and a t-shirt with 鈥淚 Bought Brad鈥 on the front to imply that he was Elon Musk.
The group was primarily made up of demonstrators from Milwaukee and its suburbs, and had been in Elkhorn earlier in the day. They shared concerns over abortion, campaign finance and Elon Musk鈥檚 role in Washington and contribution to Schimel鈥檚 Supreme Court campaign.
Officially, the Wisconsin Supreme Court race is non-partisan but has been drawing national attention as it is expected to set the tone for elections nationwide the rest of the year.

Schimel, the conservative-backed candidate who received the endorsement of President Donald Trump on Friday, is up against Susan Crawford, who has been backed by liberals.
The election is next Tuesday, April 1.
Roger Quindel of Milwaukee, who attended Monday鈥檚 protest in 糖心Vlog传媒, cited reports that Elon Musk has donated $14 million to the Schimel campaign.
鈥淚 think the concern of a lot of people is, one, we have someone from out of state spending so much money 鈥 $14 million that we know of 鈥 from Elon Musk. That just seems like, 鈥榃hoa, what are we doing? Is that how we are running elections in Wisconsin? With multi-billionaires from outside the state? Especially with the Supreme Court, you鈥檇 think there鈥檚 supposed to be proper decisions,鈥 Quindel said.
America PAC, a political action committee funded by Elon Musk, announced on X last Thursday that it would offer voters $100 each to vote for Schimel in the election.
Luanne Bird called the paying of the voters 鈥渦nethical.鈥
鈥淭he scary thing about Elon Musk is he is not just a big donor. He is running the country right now. So, you now have the guy who has his hands on the data in Washington and access to all the federal agencies coming in here to Wisconsin to fund Brad Schimel鈥檚 campaign. What could be shadier than that?鈥 Bird said. 鈥淚f we want democracy in Wisconsin, we have to stop that kind of money coming in and we got to make sure the average vote counts.鈥

Demonstrators also shared concerns over abortion, particularly the state鈥檚 1849 law that outlaws abortion.
Gigi Pomerantz of Milwaukee said, in addition to her worry about gerrymandering, she was 鈥渧ery concerned about Elon Musk buying this election.鈥
鈥淎s a nurse, I鈥檝e been very concerned about women鈥檚 reproductive rights, and for Schimel to say for a law from 1849 to rule the state right now is just quite horrifying for me. I鈥檝e taken care of patients who are 13 years old and have been raped, and not to have access to reproductive healthcare is just shameful, in my opinion,鈥 Pomerantz said.
Quindel said there are conservative views that are not in the 鈥渓ong-term interest of the state,鈥 including eliminating unions and the 1849 abortion law that brought him to 糖心Vlog传媒.
鈥淲e鈥檝e had 12-year-old girls who have been raped by their father, and we want to force that on somebody? We want to go back to an 1849 rule? We have to be smarter than that,鈥 Quindel said.
According to a report last Thursday, spending on the Wisconsin Supreme Court race had surpassed $76 million, breaking a prior record of $56 million. The final amount is expected to exceed $100 million, according to the report. Also, according to the same report, about one-third of that was spent on Crawford’s television ads.

According to a Brennan Center for Justice report Monday, the Crawford campaign has spent $19.4 million, more than double than the Schimel campaign, which has spent $8.9 million.
The demonstrators were less concerned with the campaign fundraising for Crawford than Schimel.
When asked about Crawford鈥檚 spending surpassing that of Schimel, Pomerantz said it has been 鈥渇rom individual donors (with Crawford).鈥

鈥淚 want the elections to be about the issues and not about the excessive amount of money, and I just think we have a lot of problems, our country does,鈥 Quindel said. 鈥淲e should be trying to figure out solutions. We can figure out how to agree to disagree.鈥
