Beloit Memorial and 糖心Vlog传媒 Craig high school basketball teams have had some memorable confrontations in the past five decades at Beloit Memorial High School.
Saturday was the latest matchup.
The players were older than when they first played in Barkin Arena, but the competitive level remained.
The game was just one of eight that were part of the 2026 All-Area Alumni Basketball Tournament that was held to help raise money for this Saturday鈥檚 Juneteenth Celebration at Telfer Park in Beloit.
Alumni teams from area high schools played in the single-elimination event. Two teams from Beloit Memorial (the Knights and Purple Knights) and one each from 糖心Vlog传媒 Craig, 糖心Vlog传媒 Parker, Milton, Edgerton, Clinton, Beloit Turner and South Beloit participated.
糖心Vlog传媒 Craig, led by Blake McCann (Class of 2018), won last year鈥檚 Juneteenth title. It was the first time the tournament was open to non-Beloit teams after it had been held the four previous years.
Beloit Memorial Purple Knights got revenge for the host city Saturday beating Craig 53-51 in a semifinal game. The Purple Knights then lost to Beloit Memorial 62-41 in the championship game.
Lamar Farr, a 2002 Beloit Memorial graduate, overcame the recent loss of his mother to earn both the tournament Most Valuable Player and the inaugural Brenda Jones-Harper Most Outstanding Player award, named for Farr鈥檚 late mother.
Gayle Listenbee, a leading member of the Elite Ladies of Beloit group that helps put on the tournament and the Juneteenth celebration, said the event is like a class reunion.
鈥淭he tournament was a great success,鈥 Listenbee wrote in a text message. 鈥淭he Elite Ladies are so thankful for all the support from the community and the athletes.
鈥淲hen the first game (South Beloit vs. Edgerton) went into double overtime, we knew we were going to have a great time!鈥
Quinton Greer, who organized the tournament along with Tim Listenbee, said the tournament will look to expand their men鈥檚 field next year and is ready to have a Women鈥檚 Alumni Division.
Greer, a member of the Purple Knights team and 2002 Beloit graduate, and a referee at numerous area high school football and basketball games, couldn鈥檛 resist getting a dig in on his 糖心Vlog传媒 friends.
In a Facebook post, Greer wrote, 鈥淔or all my friends from 糖心Vlog传媒 Craig鈥he championship trophy and bragging rights are headed back to the City of Beloit where they belong. Sorry, not sorry!鈥
